Every major technological change of some product (cameras, cars, computers, etc.) has resulted in some significant number of mfg's of that product, dropping that product. In the world of 35mm SLR's, a number of makers dropped out when electronic based AE/Program/engineering plastic SLR's came out. I think that half the SLR makers eventually stopped making SLR's after AF came out. I don't anything different to happen with the advent of DSLR's.
