Hmm.  I checked on the web before I sent my post, too.  Either my mental 
arithmetic was way off, or the site had the wrong info (or maybe there's 
track maintenance).

The trains I went on averaged about 50km/h due to all the stopping.  It 
took two hours to get from Bognor to London and thats a pretty similar 
distance to Brighton, I think.  Two hours doesn't feel that bad when your 
feet ache after a weekend of wandering...
