Strictly speaking, a telephoto design is one where the overall length of the
lens is shorter than its focal length, so the early 1000/8 and 500/5 were
not telephoto, but "long focus" lenses. The later versions where shorter
than their respective focal lengths and are thus true telephoto lenses. I
suspect this may be true of the early 300 and 400 as well and probaby most
of the cheap two element 500/600 lenses that clutter up the eBay listings.
