The logic is pretty straightforward for sniping.  

If you find a desirable item and bid a fair value early on, some crazy on ebay will 
get carried away seeing your bid, assess the item as valuable and proceed to bid time 
and again in small increments until they are the high bidder.  Your interest and bid 
has given them assurance that the item is valuable and lets them test your fair market 
price.  And who knows, if you live in Figi (or Arkansas <g>) then an extra $2-3 above 
your fair market price may be justified because they just can't get the lens.

On the other hand, if you save your bid until the end of the auction, you may indeed 
get a bargain.  That is what 'auction watch' is for.
