This is a relatively downmarket piece of kit and the build quality
fairly reflects the price. The 'robust' tag is based on the optics being
unlikely to be upset by rough handling. It can all be realigned by eye
and a bit of trial and error anyway, and the fixed focus probably helps.
Our scanner shares a foam filled hard-shell briefcase with the USB
CD-writer as hold baggage when flying, and I fear more for the
CD-writer.
