I agree that you should always have a 50mm (as fast as you can afford) lens
in your bag of tricks. I have 2 because I have 2 bags of tricks -- an auto focus
bag with an FA 1.4, and a manual focus bag wtih and SMC-A f1.4 . As lenses go
neither are terribly expensive--- around $50 more than the F1.7.

That said I virtually never use them. They get trotted out when the light levels
get too grim for anything else to work. My present shopping list for lenses
includes some very fast primes. I had a SMC 28 F/2 stolen a while back and I
really miss it. An incredibly useful lense. I just can't learn to love the FA
28 F2.8 that I have now. Just a little plastic toy by comparison. The original
SMC F/2 was a massive piece of glass--both long and heavy --- more like
the FA 24 F2 than any other wide angle around --- (for weight andlength) but
of a more classic diameter -- it took 52 mm filters.
