Using Gain In MP3 Direct Cut

Hello list:  Hopefully someone can get me on the right track here: I know that 
MP3 Direct Cut has a "gain" feature.  I tried using it to raise the volume 
level of a file I have, with no success!  So I need step-by-step instructions 
as to how to accomplish this!  Using Windows XP and Jaws 14.  Thanks for any 
info or help you can impart!
