Is not specific to shareware authors. Anyone whose product is
selling for less than (say) $25 should really be pricing it this way.
Sometimes you can add 0.95 to your price, sometimes
you have to subtract 0.05.
If your ideal price is $16.00, then price it at $16.95.
If your ideal price is $20.00, then price it at $19.95

But if the price of your product is higher, there's a point at which
adding cents to the price looks cheap. Don't sell a $100 product for
$99.95. But $97.00 or $95.00 are a good prices, perhaps better
than $99.

There's been a lot of study made of people's perception to prices.
People generally perceive $19.95 as a better price than $20.
And a $14,995 car is perceived in a slightly different price category
than a $15,100 car.

This pricing style is not dishonest, and I don't believe it is unscrupulous.
Some companies decide to go against the grain as part of their
creation of a marketing image. Sometimes in small ways
(ex: Walmart's use of $19.97 instead of $19.95)
