Hmm, this doesn't work for me...  And it doesn't match existing patterns
in the package.  This is not the same:

 $ idx2="";[ -n "$idx2" ] && echo "idx2=$idx2"
 $ idx2="" && echo "idx2=$idx2"
 idx2=

Am I misunderstanding your comment?
