I think it's more important to support better >4MB by default than the rare devices with less, that even if you want to use, they will probably be very basic, and you can always use USB ext root. That is, adding features to busybox that would make it more like a regular linux distribution...I think about $RANDOM and find(1) options that break quite a lot of scripts. Isn't it the biggest advantage of Openwrt? Tracking the kernel bleeding edge and such?
