Hmm, theoretically it might, as the CRC check has no consequences anymore.

But, AFAIR, when I removed the limit (7200k or whatever it was) and
created a larger image, the CFE didn't accept it. Maybe it would work
with mtd, after a minimal image has been installed.

Actually, I do have 16MB total after flashing. (I just have to install
packages which didn't fit in manually afterwards.) Why should you want
to leave 8MB alone?
