These spammers harvest email addresses from many public newsgroups
and forums. The problem is also with all the archives that don't take out
the email addresses from the posts. For example,
http://groups.google.com/groups?group=mailing.openssl.users
etc etc
I'm not picking on any archive in particular. I'm happy that google provides
archives. I'm just trying to show the point that all the email addresses are
intact
there. And this is the main problem with this kind of spam IMO. This is true
of most lists.

To stop getting all these is it as simple as unregistering from the openssl
mailing list? If that's so then I will do it. And the owner of this list
IMHO without filtering these might as well just shut it down if they can't
do anything about it given their OS limitations. Because this is totally
unaccepatbel and unusamble when you get 500+ a day. And I'm on a few lists
and have never had this happen before

Is there some legal responsibility of mailing lists owner to prevent this?

Get a good OS! With Linux / Unix you never will have such probs...

Facile and wrong. My mail servers are running a "real" OS,
and scanning attachments for viruses and handling SPAM is a real
burden -- esp. in the last week, with these really nasty worms.
