Absolutely - couldn't agree more. From a JDS point of view, we're very
aware of the discussions going on, although we may not have been the
most active or vocal over the last couple of months.

We've got a team going inside Sun to start getting a list of the main
differences in Linux, that stand in the way of having a rocking desktop
on Solaris - we've already started some work on porting HAL to Solaris
and there are a couple of people involved.

DBUS is in the stage where it's starting to freeze some of its API -
there's been a lot of change there. Hopefully it'll start settling down
over the next couple of months to look at this more closely.

Absolutely - that sounds ideal. I guess we probably need to divide
things up between a developer and distribution - while DBUS and HAL are
very important to us [JDS/GNOME], we're not at the stage where we need
to worry about them from a distribution point of view. We need to work
closely with freedesktop.org to make sure they work on Solaris first and
foremost.

However, I do think we can make real progress on the distribution front
in parallel ;)

So this is interesting too. I've just got confirmation from Derek that
he's setup a desktop community on OpenSolaris.org - obviously it's just
the bare bones at the moment, so we need to put a bit of work into
getting it ready before we go live.

My idea is that we could have the OpenSolaris.org desktop community as
an umbrella for other things -

        Desktop
         - GNOME
         - KDE
         - Mozilla
         - OpenOffice
         - ....

So we probably need to think what infrastructure we can share, and what
it makes sense to split out. For example, I think there's a huge amount
of value in having a [EMAIL PROTECTED], but may make sense
to have jds/gnome-discuss and kde-discuss. Perhaps we share our Blog
space, and subdivide the web site as appropriate -

  http://www.opensolaris.org/os/community/desktop
     http://www.opensolaris.org/os/community/desktop/gnome
     http://www.opensolaris.org/os/community/desktop/kde
     .....

Thoughts?
