This is the Syracuse Area Rare Bird Alert for the week of December 27, 2021 Highlights: ----------- CACKLING GOOSE SNOWY OWL NORTHERN SHRIKE GOLDEN EAGLE PEREGRINE FALCON ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK NORTHERN GOSHAWK BLACK VULTURE BONAPARTE’S GULL LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL GLAUCOUS GULL SLATY-BACKED GULL ICELAND GULL MARSH WREN HERMIT THRUSH YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLER WHITE-CROWNED SPARROW RUSTY BLACKBIRD COMMON GRACKLE COMMON REDPOLL PURPLE FINCH PINE SISKIN RED CROSSBILL Montezuma National Wildlife Refuge (MNWR) and Montezuma Wetlands Complex (MWC) ------------ 12/28: A SNOWY OWL was seen in flight at the Visitor’s Center. 12/30: A MARSH WREN was seen at the Audubon Center on Rt. 89. 12/31; 3 YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLERS and a SNOWY OWL were seen at the Visitor’s Center. A PEREGRINE FALCON was seen at Knox-Marsellus Marsh. 1/1: 4 SANDHILL CRANES were seen at the Visitor’s Center. They were seen again the next day. Cayuga County ------------ 12/31: 50 COMMON REDPOLLS were seen at the Sterling Nature Center. Onondaga County ------------ 12/27: A ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK was seen at the Orange Lot of the New York State Fair. 12/28: 2 WHITE-CROWNED SPARROWS continue at the Marshy Spits area south of the Honeywell Center on the west side of Onondaga Lake.A HERMIT THRUSH was seen on the Bog trail at Beaver Lake Nature Center west of Baldwinsville. A PEREGRINE FALCON was seen at the Honeywell Center on Onondaga Lake. 12/29: An ICELAND GULL was seen on Vincent Corners Road south of Rt. 80 north of Fabius. 13 PURPLE FINCHES were seen at Highland Forest County Park. 12/30: A NORTHERN SHRIKE was seen at Three Rivers WMA north of Baldwinsville. A RUSTY BLACKBIRD was seen near Jordan. 12/31; A PINE SISKIN was seen at the Marshy Spits area south of the Honeywell Center on Onondaga Lake. A SNOWY OWL was seen near Lakeview Point on Onondaga Lake. 1/2: A HERMIT THRUSH was seen on Bennet Corners Road in Camillus. An ICELAND GULL was seen at the Inner Harbor south of Onondaga Lake in Syracuse. Oswego County ------------ 12/31: A LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL was seen at Rt.89 and Fred Haynes Blvd. south of Oswego. An ICELAND GULL was seen at the Locks in Fulton on the Oswego River. 1/1: A COMMON GRACKLE was seen on Biddlecum Road north of Phoenix. A HERMIT THRUSH was seen at the Rice Creek Field Station south of Oswego. A NORTHERN SHRIKE was seen on Thompson Road south of Oswego. A GLAUCOUS GULL was seen at the corner of Rt. 89 and Fred Haynes Blvd. south of Oswego. 1/3: A HERMIT THRUSH was seen on East Parry Road near Pennelville. Madison County ------------ 12/29: A NORTHERN GOSHAWK was seen at the south end of Jones Road in the Stony Pond State Forest. 12/30: A SLATY-BACKED GULL was found at the Madison County Landfill south of Canastota. It was seen through 1/1 but not since. 1/1: 2 PEREGRINE FALCONS were seen at the Tuttle Road Quarry south of Canastota. A PEREGRINE FALCON and an ICELAND GULL were seen on Ditchbank Road north of Canastota. A GLAUCOUS GULL was seen at the Madison county Landfill. A NORTHERN SHRIKE was seen at the Fenner Road Windmills south of Canastota. 1/2: An ICELAND GULL was seen at the Madison County Landfill. 2 were seen the next day. Oneida County ------------ 12/30: A GLAUCOUS GULL was seen at Sylvan Beach on Oneida Lake. 1/1: A CACKLING GOOSE was seen on Rock Road north of Verona. A NORTHERN SHRIKE was seen on County Rt. 86 near Durhamville. 3 BONAPARTE’S GULLS were seen at Sylvan Beach on Oneida Lake. 2 PEREGRINE FALCONS were seen on the Adirondack Bank in Utica where they are known to breed. Herkimer County ------------ 12/28: 4 BLACK VULTURES were seen in flight in Little Falls. A RED CROSSBILL was seen at Nick’s Lake near Old Forge. 12/29: 10 RED CROSSBILLS were seen at Moss Lake north of Eagle Bay. 12/30: 16 RED CROSSBILLS were seen at Bear Lake east of McKeever .
