Central Park, Manhattan, N.Y. City
Thursday, 4 April, 2013

Concurring with Andrew's post on 2 Queens Co. parks' migrants today, the
northern half of Central revealed no warbler (to me), but was (relatively)
chock-full of Kinglets, including one Ruby-crowned, which was singing near the
Conservatory Garden in early morning. The total number of Golden-crowned
Kinglets was 25+, with several small flocks of 4 or 5, and one group of 7 or
more. Also seen in modest (freshly arrived) increase were "red" Fox Sparrows,
which also were quite vocal early on. E. Phoebes were in scant numbers for
this date, & a number of migrants seem to have departed, & not yet been
replenished. The Golden-cr. Kinglet theme was repeated in lesser scale in my
briefer looks in Morningside Park (just northwest of Central) and Riverside
Park on Manhattan's upper west side, a female Red-breasted Merganser a nice
addition at the Hudson River near there. A few Laughing Gulls have started to
appear in Central at the reservoir, where duckage seems down a little, although
Wood Ducks, N. Shovelers and a few other spp. continue in more than one area. I
did not get to the southern half of Central & perhaps some other migrants were
noted there.

Good birding,

Tom Fiore,
Manhattan
