I've used both MacPorts and fink (mostly macports), but ended up using HomeBrew [1] as my primary source of software on the Mac. Something to check out if you're not sure which packaging system to use. [1]: http://mxcl.github.com/homebrew/ They have a "Brew" for mutt which is 1.5.21, and (for the roll-yer-own types such as myself) all the requisites to build mutt from source.
