IMHO, certainly. I've never ran into a situation where it was
inappropriate to do this, and yours is the first time I've heard of
it causing problems for anyone. It's fairly common for me to go to
my =sent folder and reply to a message I sent with further info or
correction or whatever.

Yet another proof that Reply-To shouldn't be used for redirecting list
mail traffic. :-) Even if this is a bit beside the point...

You could supply a proper Mail-Followup-To header (eg. with send-hook
and my_hdr) and then both L (list-reply) and g (group-reply) ought to
work right. Well, I'm not sure about group-reply, but list-reply should
definitely work right I think.
An alternative is to use a From address for posting to that list which
isn't covered by your $alternates setting.
