Yes, that's about it. The best method inside Mutt is to use the
"incoming mailboxes view" (c ? <tab> or c <tab> <tab>) which displays
the folders you've defined as incoming mailboxes (with the "mailboxes"
command). If a folder has new mail, that will be indicated, but there
won't be any kind of stats.
The reason why there is no support is that going through all the folders
and checking statistics and such would potentially take a Very Long
Time. Of course you could make this optional, so that the user gets to
have a coice of whether this happens or not, but currently nobody's
implemented that.
Also, since Mutt is single-threaded it can't do any kind of statistics
gathering in the background, which could possibly be the best method.
Therefore, having a completely separate application which does this all
might in fact be the best solution... I think there's some new mail
notifiers which in fact also give statistics on the current state of all
the folders they monitor. I'm not sure though, I couldn't give you any
names. :-)
