That's good.

Hokay; this looks a little odd. You should have a Content-Type: of
application/pgp-encrypted before that. Here is exactly how an encrypted
message sent from me looks, with some noise ellipsed out:

  Message-ID: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
  Mime-Version: 1.0
  Content-Type: multipart/encrypted; protocol="application/pgp-encrypted";

  Content-Length: 3923
  Lines: 74

How do your headers look?

My PGP public key is available at the pgp.net keyservers or from

  http://www.bigfoot.com/~davidtg/code.pgp.html

directly. Why don't you send me an encrypted message, perhaps containing
your public key so I can send one back to you.

%
% When I open that attachment I see:
% ----BEGIN PGP MESSAGE----
% (pgp text) garbage garbage garbage etc
% ----END PGP MESSAGE----
% and in the bottom of the console "no matching mailcap entry found. viewing as text."

How very odd.

%
% What mailcap entry or entries should I have to make gnupg fully functional in mutt?
Should

You shouldn't need any; I just reviewed my muttrc and gpg.rc and .mailcap
and have no auto_view entries for anything other than text/html...

% I have an auto_view entry in .muttrc and, if so, what should it be? In essence,
what do I
% need to do to be prompted for a passphrase to decrypt an encrypted message when I
open

Yep.

% one. Is this normal behaviour for mutt or am I expecting too much? Do I need to
reinstall

Oh, no; that's how it works, all right. For the rest of us ;-)

% gnupg perhaps?

I don't think it's likely to be that; it *does* sound like a problem in
how mutt thinks of the message, which is why I think the headers may need
some work.

%
% Thanks for your time. None of this info is in the documentation.

Have you checked out doc/PGP-Notes.txt in the source distribution?
That's a start. I admit, though, that I've had a little bit of work
going from 0.x to 1.2x...
