The Debian GNU/Linux folks have a nice program called ssmtp, which gives you a simple SMTP client which imitates sendmail's command line. Note that you don't have to wade through binary packages, just go for ftp://ftp.debian.org/debian/dists/stable/main/source/mail/ssmtp* or something like this. You get the idea. Installation of this smtp client is quite simple, as is compiling it. In addition, you can _very_ easily configure postfix for a simple client site.
