I've looked at the other replies to this thread, and I'm disturbed.

"Not a maildir" format is taken as mbox by most. If you're not
thinking about mbox, I don't know what you want.

If you're thinking about mbox, I don't see the problem.

I use maildirs, and whenever I save a message anywhere that's
not a maildir, the message is in mbox format, as far as I can
see.

With $MAILDIR a directory (with attendant $MAILDIR/tmp,
$MAILDIR/new, and $MAILDIR/cur), with folder="$MAILDIR/", when I
save a message to =foo, I get an mbox $MAILDIR/zorglub.

When I save to foo, I get a foo mbox in the currect directory.

When I save to a_directory that does not have the attendant cur,
new, tmp subdirs, I get an error.

When I save to $MAILDIR, without a filename, the message goes in
$MAILDIR/cur/appropriatelongmangledmaildirfilename.

I find the behaviour intuitive, foolproof, and unrestrictive.
What more can I say? I just don't see the problem ...
