There are different ways. You can change the default for the remainder of your
current mutt session by typing
:set mbox_type=mbox
The ":" will take you down to a command-line input at the bottom of the
screen, where you can type most any of the sorts of commands that can go in
$HOME/.muttrc.
I often want to just save one or two messages in mbox format; for that, I find
it easier to go
|formail>>foldername
formail will add the "From " line if needed.
