by, as you say it, <inexperienced> people, the absolves you of responsibility

Ummm... don't know about you, but I have a fast connection at work and a fast
connection at home, but when I'm on the road I'm still relegated to 56k or
less over a modem (and I quite often PAY for that time spent dialed-in). All
of that considered, I think I'm lucky... some people still pay PER CHARACTER
for storage and/or transmission (eg. shell accounts).
In short, you really <should> try to set as good an example as you can for
others and help try to make the net a more-liveable place.... try to help
educate your fellow users, etc. I could go in to stories of "back when most
of this was done over UUCP and frame relay," but I'll agree it's probably
getting a bit old (and there's no sense living in the past).
Not to be too much of a pain, but you may want to check out RFC1855... it's
relatively well-written and explains all of this, and more (and can serve as
useful information/reference for others, in case you want to hand it out).
Here's an easy pointer: http://www.cybernothing.org/cno/docs/rfc1855.html
Respectfully,
Russell
