I know, but in fact I'm convinced it could be a killer feature. It's a
first step to make Mutt useable as a "library" by other programs.

Please think about whether the path to that goal driven "feature by
feature" is the right way.
As I said, it is not my intention to request many features towards that
goal, or to change Mutt's shape. It's one simple feature (the one
implemented with the short patch), and a second and last simple feature,
that I think is also implementable with a short patch.
The current form is the result of creating a lean and efficient solution
with low consumption of ressources in mind with intentionally limited
features.
Nothing in the first feature I implemented moves Mutt away from that form.
