I'll chime in and say I would appreciate this feature. I'd love to have one more line usable for other purposes.

One thing I'd appreciate in conjunction with this is a mechanism to reset the window title on exit, though, since I keep hostname and working directory in the window title when I'm just in the shell.
I'm not sure this is something that can/should be done in Mutt, at least if you want to do it reliably. It is however easy to do this in your shell, for instance by setting the PROMPT_COMMAND if you use bash, or with the precmd hook if you use zsh.
