But the phrase "standing on the shoulders of giants" is very true in this case. I could never make anything as awesome as Mutt on my own.

I would be embarrassed to put myself above Thomas Roessler, Brendan Cully, Rocco Rutte, and all the others who have put so much into this project too.

I think the most respectful thing is to leave the single line version with Michael Elkins' name. :)

Maybe add a line pointing to the COPYRIGHT file or perhaps a link to somewhere on the website?

I was thinking perhaps an option would be to look at the number of lines contributed, but with the migration through various CVS systems over the years, that might be non trivial and would of course also bring up the question as to what the cut off point should be.
