That's a good point, which I neglected to mention is the downside to #3. It's most likely to cause pain to users.
Personally I'm leaning toward #1 to at least give users the choice (assuming there might be that one MTA, somewhere, that reads recips from the mail by default instead of looking at the arguments).

Me too, and as Gero made me aware of, it affects exim4. Fortunately, I believe my provider is stripping the header for me, but it's certainly embarrassing.
