I'm going to push the v3 and the autoconf patches up later today.
The past week, I've been struggling about which branch to push to.
Although I would _really_ like to push these into stable for 1.8.1, I
think the changes are just too big, even more so given the new translation
strings. So I'm going to be safe and push them into default.
