i think that's a perception problem. there are exactly two (or three)
people who actively torpedo any initiative to add functionality. they
make a lot of noise, but didn't contribute anything significant over
several years. so my response would be: screw them. they can contribute
#ifdefs if they care - after the fact.

that doesn't mean that "anything goes", but strict adherence to the unix
principle simply doesn't mix with usability beyond a certain complexity.
