Okay, yesterday I stumbled across a patch that does the same thing.  So
I guess I reinvented the wheel.

Patch 1 of the series may still be interesting though, even if the rest
are not.  It consolidates and simplifies some duplicated code.  It also
removes an unused variable in sime_findKeys().

On a different note, as a newcomer this reception is quite demotivating.
Even a (polite) quick email rejecting the patch is better than dead
silence.  The development community doesn't appear especially vibrant.
A more friendly and welcoming attitude surely wouldn't hurt.
