I guess it's safe to say that the current tools are dead and new tools will need to be purchased from Xamarin (Miquel's new startup).

From my perspective the time I have invested in Monotouch and Monodroid is *way* more valuable than paying for the tools, so I'm happy to re-purchase. In the end it is in all our interest to make sure their startup will succeed. I consider it an investment in the future of mono.
