An off the shelf Opteron or G5 will be a lot cheaper than the same amount of Itanium2/Power5 CPU speed, but available configurations cap out at about 4 CPUs and 64G of RAM per machine right now. Companies like SGI and HP can build Itanium2-based single machines with pretty much as many CPUs and as much shared RAM as you care to pay for. SGI is now even offering to build clusters of such machines with multiple 10Gbit/sec interfaces between them. If your job requires huge amounts of shared data, you don't have a lot of alternatives. -Dave Dodge ------------------------------------------------------- SF email is sponsored by - The IT Product Guide Read honest & candid reviews on hundreds of IT Products from real users.
