        Ok.  That is what appeared to be the case but I thought it best to
        make sure.

        That was going to be my next suggestion - there is a later version
        of the nVidia drivers (6629 I think, something like that).

        It is a very intermittent problem - sometimes the same encoding load
        works fine, other times I've had the system hang/freeze repeatedly
        and running w/o X11 was the work around.  On another system with a
        Matrox card I've never had any problems at all so it feels like
        the problem is nVidia module related.
