It is more likely that the CD/DVD becomes unusable after a few years.
That then Label damages the CD/DVD. I have heared from several people
that CD's became unreadable after a few years.

I don't know if my cd's are having problem's. I don't used CD/DVD as
backup media. For that I have a nice tape drive, 80GB uncompressd to one
tape.

For Labeling CD's I use a CD-Marker like "edding 8400".

BTW: You should keep water away from CD's. That also easily destroys
CD's.
