Ah, I had not heard about that problem - but it make sense. In one of the video magazines I subscribe to there was an article that was very emphatic about not using "Sharpie" (or other permanent marking pens) because the acid based inks would erode the top surface and cause data loss. However, the test conditions involved 60C temperatures for 100 hours... Their recommendation was to use the inkjet printable media and an inkjet printer because the inks are water based. I use the permanent marker pens and my philosophy is before the time the data is in danger of being lost I will have migrated the data to the next generation of media. In a couple years the "Blue-Ray" (or comparable) media/recorders will be available and will hold much more data - so I will merge 5 or 6 DVDs onto a single disc in the future. Until that time I use the "Sharpie" pens and store the DVDs away from light and heat.
