Not to rekindle an old flamewar, but just to put things in
perspective...

The gcc-2.96 compiler was included in the Red Hat 7.x releases, the last
one (7.3) being released in March 2002.
The initial subversions of the gcc-2.96 indeed had issues with some
applications. However, those problems got fixed; a RH7.3 system having
installed gcc-2.96-113 should compile everything with no more problems
than any other old-ish gcc release.

The "broken gcc-2.96" rumour is a myth with a tiny kernel of truth.

The tiny truth kernel is due to the initial versions being unable to
compile properly a very limited number of apps, while still being able
to compile just fine the vast majority of open source software - after
all, it was the compiler used by RH to build their entire distribution.

The large myth part is, for the most, due to mplayer blindly claiming
"broken compiler" even when using a fixed gcc. In fact, on RH7.3, i used
the updated gcc-2.96 to compile mplayer with no problems whatsoever.
The mplayer gang are clever people, but they often get too religious.

So, anyone still running RH7.x should have a fixed gcc by now. In any
case, those should be rare instances, as the vast majority of RH users
have migrated at least to RH9 by now, so they should be using at least
gcc-3.2.
