You very well may be the only person experiencing the trouble.  If my
recollection from the uproar over redhat's stunt is correct, only one
redhat release was "infected" by 2.96.  And there have been a number
of releases since, so there is a good chance that only a very few
people are even using it in relation to the mjpeg tool kit.

Sadly, due to the object code incompatibility problems, yes, getting
rid of it involves a whole lot of surgery.

You should also complain at redhat, because it was their stuipdity
that got you into the perdicament you find yourself in.
