I just checked Sony's "DVCAM Format Overview" document and
PAL DV is indeed 4:2:0

Ah, ok. That is helpful info in tracking down where the
problem is.

I think that simply taking the defaults (no --yv12 options) for
libdv, smilutils, and mjpegtools should, as Charlie mentioned,
do the right thing.

I have found the raw format to be very useful. Earlier versions
of the AVI format had a 2GB limit but 'raw' does not (if the
underlying filesystem supports large files). I've found
single large files easier to use than multiple 1 or 2GB files.
