        This is not the first report of that type of problem with the 1.6.x
        version so while it's possible there's something wrong with the
        RPMS I'm beginning to suspect a deeper problem with that release.

        Instead of a prepackaged RPM or SRPM my recommendation would be,
        at least for the present time, to do a cvs checkout of the CVS
        version.   MANY buglets have been fixed as well, a number of 
        enhancements have been made and new utilities have been added.

        I'm not sure how much effort you want to put into debugging an old 
        release.     Can you give building the CVS version a try and see if
        that clears up the problem?
