In my experience with experimenting with the --reduce-hf flag to mpeg2enc,
that having the flag turned on created a ringing effect at sharp edge
transitions in the playback image.

So if for example you had an image of a building against a blue sky, if
you looked closely next to the edge of the building there would be ghosts
of the building edge adjacent to the edge in the playback image of the
blue sky. Credit lettering and station ID bugs also exhibit the ghosting
due to the sharp edge transitions they create. The ghosts will be faint,
and from a normal TV viewing distance, you will likely not see them, but
if you look right up next to the TV, you should see them.

I have not been able to find a similar effect from using
yuvdenoise/yuvmedian and turning on the "--keep-hf" flag to mpeg2enc.
