Hmm... I have to cut 20 or so from the left and at least 4 from the right, 
depending on the channel, day and what I had for breakfast (it seems pretty 
random :-) [I'm using PAL in the UK]

I seem to remember I once asked the Marvel list if there was some way to tweak 
the front/back porch settings so as not to grab so much of the horizontal 
blanking interval, but the only suggestion was to use the lavrec cropping 
settings. As it is, I tend to crop after recording - that way I can grab the 
whole lot then check exactly what settings to use before encoding to whatever 
format I want to use.
