I'm not sure the issue is that the player *can't* play SVCD.  If it is 
specced to be able to do this but won't it is possible that some bugs in
1.6.1 or lower may be the cause.  The latest stable version fixes these
Problems but there isn't yet a binary release.  You'd have to build from
the source code for the moment.
