To me there was no debate - I went with the + format. It can handle
the RW media at ~2.4x vs the 1x of DVD-RW. 2x rated DVD-RW drives
are just now appearing (but I have not seen any 2x -RW media yet).

Playback is no problem with the record (write once) media - even my
couple year old portable DVD player accepts DVD+R discs without any
problems at all. The newer DVD player (the Philips unit mentioned
earlier) accepts +RW (and -RW I have heard) discs.

The problem is with the rewriteable media. Both DVD-RW and DVD+RW
have lower reflectivity and older players will not accept either
type of rewriteable media. If a player accepts one rewriteable
format it almost certainly accept the other type. I have also
had problems with older DVDROM drives not accepting rewriteable DVD
media (but the write once discs were accepted without trouble).

Overall the compatibility problem is not as bad as some folks have made
it sound and the situation is getting better with time.

        Cheers,
        Steven Schultz
