Unix world was saying immediately after start of x86 what terrible crap it is, but it was cheap and it's cheap so mostly it's still only one option. But yes, ARM or MIPS are getting more and more presence which is really good. Regarding that new alliance..... there is and there was couple of them and most of them are just history.
