Rebuild support for softraid was implemented by Marco during the c2k9
hackathon, hence it became readily available in the 4.6 release. If you're
playing with softraid you really want to be using a current version anyway,
due to the number of bugfixes and improvements that have been implemented
more recently.

The softraid metadata format was last changed around 18 months ago (prior to
4.4 being released). As a result, you should be able to successfully rebuild
a softraid volume created on a 4.4 system (not that I've tried it). As you
mention, a full backup should be in order regardless!
