As far as I know, softraid didn't support rebuilds in 4.4; it was added later. Judging from the man page differences between releases, I'd say it was between 4.4 and 4.5. If you're in for potentially dangerous advice: perhaps rebuilding the array with a later release is possible. You probably want to check with a developer first.
