The problem was disk i/o, so you might not perceive the issue on a firewall. But:

I see that I was mistaken; you did say 'Other Linux (64-bit)', whereas I had used 'Other (64-bit)' when I encountered the problem. My apologies.

Was it ESX that you had the performance problems with and
what kind of work load were you running on the system?

It was ESXi 3.5 U3, and the load was nil on both the guest and the host. It was definitely not resource-related.
