Look into ulimit (see your shells manpage for details).
Note that there's additional restrictions (next to ulimits) on the
amount of memory any single process can allocate that depends on the
architecture you run on. For more details on this topic, google for
MAXDSIZ.

I'm guessing you're on i386 (you did not tell us), so MAXDSIZ will be
a good candidate.
