Well, it's empty until you start using it (by building (parts of) the tree). That's why the "newfs trick" is a safe way to start from scratch. > 2. In any case, how big does that slice need to be? I have 'WRKOBJDIR=/usr/obj/ports' for ports building, that also takes some room. So the correct answer is "depends". With current disksizes, giving it a couple of G's shouldn't hurt and will give you plenty of room to do whatever.
