This all seems to be a problem with your Desktop
I've often had problems copying large files from Windows clients to
other machines using the
Explorer copy (including Windows-to-Windows, so I'm not convinced
this is Samba)
I usually batch the files into ~ 50Mb at a time, or use a different
copying mechanism/program (or a script
to copy n directories across at a time.)
Try Google with "windows copy large files hangs" or something like
that - lots to read.
My experience is more with Windows 2003 server, but there is
definitely something in MS code.
And Vista still has issues ... just new ones. 8-)

I copy several Gig each day from Windows to OpenBSD 4.2 with Samba,
and from FreeBSD to the same
OpenBSD box - no problems at all (the stuff is pulled across from
Windows via smbclient.) On another network,
there are ~8 Windows boxes connected to a different, stock i386
OpenBSD 4.2 with Samba - no issues.
See if you can find a different copying program ...
